Festa della Repubblica – 2nd June

Today is a national holiday celebrating the birth of the Republic, founded after a national referendum was held over June 2nd & 3rd 1946. Ceremonies include the laying of a laurel wreath at the foot of the tomb of the unknown soldier at the National Monument to Victor Emanuel II in Piazza Venezia in Rome as well as a military march-past before top State officials. Taking part in the parade are all the Armed Forces, every Police Force, the National Fire Services Corp and the Italian Red Cross.

The festivities continue in the afternoon when the gardens of the Quirinale Palace, the official residence of the Italian Head of State, are opened to members of the general public; a visit accompanied by music performed by the bands of the Italian Army, Navy, Air force, Carabineri, State Police, Finance Police, Prison Police and Forest Rangers.

Free entry. The general public may watch the parade free of charge standing behind the barriers. Invitations or passes are not available. Only disabled persons will be allowed into especially reserved areas on presentation of papers. Seating in the stand is reserved for guests and the authorities.
