Piranesi, “The Rembrandt of The Ruins”.
27/07/2010- 26/09/2010
An exhibition on how the eternal city appeared in Goethe’s times.
On view at this exhibition, dedicated to the famous engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), are a selection of 35 etchings from Piranesi’s impressive work: “Views of Rome”.

Faithfully, albeit with a dramatic touch, the “Rembrandt of the Ruins” (as he was called in 1779 by Giovanni Ludovico Bianconi in his biography “Historic Eulogy of Cavalier Giambattista Piranesi”) depicted ancient Roman monuments, such as triumphal arches or Castel Sant’Angelo, so passionately as to restore souls to inanimate things. There is also an opportunity at the exhibition at the Casa di Goethe to view the lone work in Italy which has been attributed to Goethe: “Italian Countryside with Monastery” dated June 1787. (on permanent loan from Rechburg & Betzkoj Associates (RB) ).
