The iournal of this American aristocrat tells the moving story of her relationship with the Anderson family against the backdrop of an age rocked by a series of major changes.
The exhibition comprises fifty works of art plus photographs and postcards (paintings and sculptures by Andreas and Hendrik, paintings and pastels by Howard Cushing and James Brigg Potter). This entrancing “Portrait of a Lady” depicts an enthusiastic traveller, a woman enjoying refined friendships who is in a constant, typically Anglo-American, anti-conventional flight from her own family roots.
The picture emerging appears very similar to the female characters from the books of her friend Henry James (Olivia’s rival for Hendrik’s affections). She undoubtedly embodies a woman at the turn of a century in ferment, very much aware of a feminist enlightenment which still stirred conflicting intimate feelings and was yet in perfect step with the rapids changes of the times.
