It reaches out to embrace the most significant moments in his rise to power by examining his relations with allies/adversaries like Crassus, Pompey and Cicero, his military feats that bought him glory and wealth and the Egyptian adventure and meeting with Queen Cleopatra. In addition the cultural and artistic environments of Rome are analysed in the years that run from his death on the ides of March in 44 AD to the triumphant acquisition of power by his young adopted son Octavian
