For the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, a large reorganisation of the whole archaeological area of the centre of Rome is planned. The process is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Rome Council. The initiative is designed to better clarify and separate responsibilities between authorities so that the archaeological area of the centre of Rome, the area between the Colosseum and the Imperial Forum, is better presented.
New infrastructures will be provided opening up underground areas including below Via dei Fori. There will be new signs, new guided itineraries and new technology such as the use of palm-held devices, phones or visual head gear. The primary company funding this project is Arcus Spa but the participation of other bodies such as banking foundations or companies offering multimedia systems is desired.
