Opening of the Colosseum’s upper third-floor levels, the hypogeum and the Porto Libitina

The third-floor levels have finally been opened, a unique standpoint offering a spectacular view of not merely the Colosseum’s internal spaces, but also of the whole of Rome.

Access to the last upper ring is crucial in order to gain an understanding of the relationship between the Colosseum and the vast area of the Forum, Imperial Rome’s other monuments as well as the layout of the city. At the same time, here visitors are able to get an all-inclusive idea of the monument’s original proportions and may fully enjoy the magnificence of the Colosseum.

In addition, entry to the monument’s subterranean world has been reopened to the public which may be approached from the sector including the Porta Libitina, restoration work on which has just been completed.

A descent into the hypogeum adds another key piece to a proper understanding of the Colosseum. These underground tunnels and rooms were in fact a bee hive of all the activity so vital for the gladiatorial games to be held.

These areas all tell behind-the-scene stories of the Colosseum’s busy days, giving a special insight into the workings, joys and pains of timeless symbol of the Eternal City

Only groups of 25 people accompanied by a guide are granted access to the third floor and underground chambers.
