Small groups of visitors will taken through the Colosseum by archaeologists, making brief stops at the most important spots.
The walk through the Colosseum also includes a visit to the exhibition Gladiatores, which offers an exciting insight into the gladiator’s profession through a whole range of items on display which have been recreated by skilled craftsmen who based their work on images handed down by the mosaics and frescoes of the time. Afterwards, visitors are treated to a visit to the arena itself, to a glimpse of its underground world of passages and tunnels. Explanations are also provided about the system worked behind the scenes, the kinds of machines to be found there and how they were used, the wild beasts that were kept there and their role in its the games themselves.
Finally, the hypogeums (underground levels) along with the tunnels and internal arches are all to be illuminated by a hot air balloon floating over the arena. The amphitheatre’s underground world is therefore likely to be cloaked in a rather unique atmosphere thanks to the glow from this artificial full moon.
A call at the Baths of Caracalla takes us back on a journey to the past to find out how this massive complex worked. It is a chance to discover how the Romans spent their time there and the social role of the baths in daily Roman life. As well as reconstructing our understanding of the archaeological complex, visitors will also learn about the customs, rites and habits which were part of life in ancient Rome.
