The Mosque

The Rome Mosque, which was inaugurated in 1995, is the biggest in Europe. It is an important point of reference for the capital’s Muslims.
Built on a design by the Portuguese architects Gigliotti and Moussawi, it is located in perfect harmony with its green surroundings on the slopes of Monti Parioli. The inside of the 30,000 m² structure is characterised by a large prayer hall that evokes the image of a forest thanks to the use of tri-stemmed columns that imitate the features of trees.

At the mosque, which is held as the most prestigious Islamic centre in Italy, the faithful come not only to prey and listen to the Imam’s sermons given on Friday and during Ramadan, but to celebrate weddings in the Islamic tradition, to accept those converting to Islam and to help the families of Muslims who have passed away in Italy with funeral rites and the repatriation of the deceased.
